Infection Scare.

A week ago yesterday Brandon came home from work with what we thought at the time was a minor medical issue. We had been paying attention to a knot on his knee that seemed to come up out of nowhere several days prior. But that Friday evening the knot had more than tripled in size in less than 24 hours and after a quick call to my mom (our area medical expert) we decided to head to urgent care. Of course, Brandon complained the entire way and my understanding of his lack of "good patient" behavior faded quickly. To be blunt...it was a LONG quiet night for both of us!

After our quick wait at CareNow (online check in is AMAZING) the doctor told us to head straight to the ER and she would call them to warn of our arrival. At this point my heart was racing. She didn't give us many details and I still had a nagging husband who insisted he didn't need medical attention. So I continued to ignore his comments, loaded him in the van and got to the ER as quick as I could. We, of course, had to wait for what felt like forever and finally were called back.

It took the doctor about ten minutes to decide it was an infection that had gotten out of hand. Not only was the infection site swollen from constant irritation (walking, bending, squatting to work in all those tiny airplane compartments) the infection had started to spread through his leg. She called it a blood infection, which I'm sure is not a technical term, but we aren't exactly technical people, so it worked for us. He was administered two antibiotic shots, which according to him hurt badly (I told him it was payback for harassing me so much all night) and given four different antibiotic meds to take simultaneously over the next week. They put him in a knee immobilizer, crutches and gave strict orders not to return to work for five days, which of course he didn't follow.

She also told us that if we hadn't come in for treatment when we did there is a probable chance the infection would have spread throughout his bloodstream and into his organs, which could have eventually caused organ failure, leading to death. So, PRAISE GOD!!! Praise God my husband has an unrelenting wife that refused to take him home. Praise God my husband has a "dramatic" mother in law that insisted I take him for treatment in the first place. And most of all Praise God that my husband was under the care of the Great Physician even before we knew the infection had gotten out of hand.

Brandon is doing much better and has been cleared by an orthopedic surgeon to lose the knee immobilizer, crutches and bad attitude! He is now done with all medication and is healing perfectly! Thank you Jesus!

As it turns out the infection was more than likely caused by a few particles of roofing shingle being trapped in an open sore on his knee, which took place while roofing the kids' fort. Funny, but perhaps more scary, how such a simple project could have changed the course of our family so dramatically. But, God had other plans! I'm so very thankful for His protection of my sweet, and sometimes ornery, husband.

Love you, Honey!
